| Guangzhou is the South Gate of China. It is also the capital and the sub-provincial city of Guangdong Province in southern mainland China. Known by an older English-language name, Canton, Guangzhou is based on a French language transliteration of the name of the province in Cantonese. The Guangzhou Travel Guide declares that it the most populous city in the province and the third most populous metropolitan area in China.

Guangzhou is located in the middle south of Guangdong Province, north of the Pearl River Delta. Covering an area of 7434.4 square kilometers (2870 square miles), Guangzhou is home to more than 11 million people, including a 3.7 million transitory population. Guangzhou is famous as a hometown for overseas Chinese. It boasts the largest population of overseas Chinese people.
